How you can get involved in this year’s Small Business Saturday

Each year, Small Business Saturday promotes the great service and value that small businesses offer, and encourages consumers to support their local communities by shopping local. This is the fifth year the UK has promoted the event, the US have been hosting it for more than a decade and it has proven very successful for small businesses.

This year Small Business Saturday will be held on 2nd December. On this day consumers across the country are encouraged to shop local and show their support to their local communities. Whether it’s supporting businesses online, in stores or in offices, any small business can get involved.

Michelle Ovens, director of Small Business Saturday, says: “[The campaign] has really captured the hearts of communities and it gains in traction year on year. This is not just because it’s a nice message, but because everyone gains from it: small businesses are getting new customers and revenues, customers are meeting new businesses that offer great service, great value and [are run by] local people who know your name when you walk through the door.”

Small Business Saturday gives small businesses the boost they need after bigger brands have increased their sales from Black Friday and Cyber Monday offers. It is estimated that last year the event earned smaller businesses an additional £717m, this was up 15 per cent from 2015.

It was also reported that over 80% of local authorities across the UK supported the campaign in a variety of ways to create maximum exposure.

The event is sponsored by American Express but as a small business you have freedom to organise your own event. This can vary from hosting a special event or campaign to offering Christmas discounts for your customers.

You can search on the small business finder to find out which other businesses in your local area are getting involved in the event.

If you would like to get involved in Small Business Saturday and support your local community visit for more information on to how you can sign up. There are free aids to help you prepare giving you the option to download logos, social media guides and toolkits.
